Hi Anna,

Brilliant! That could come in useful next time I'm in Hungary!

I'm afraid I don't speak any other languages too well - I can get by in a few languages, but I wouldn't say that I could 'speak' any of them!

As for my surname, yeah, it's Polish. My grandfather was Polish but he died when I was one; I don't speak a word of Polish and I've never even been there. I just inherited the name! I'd love to go there sometime, family legend has it that there's a family brewery somewhere there, still waiting to be claimed.

Hi Paul,

As I read your comment on the Italian word 'sarni', I couldn't help giggling... :o
Not only in English and Italian has this word a meaning, but in Hungarian as well. The spelling is not exactly the same in Hungarian (if you want to have the sound form 's', in Hungarian writing it looks like 'sz'), but I'm pretty sure that 99% of Hungarians would have the same association as I had when I saw this word written).
Sooo... when 'sarni' is pronounced (with a rolled 'r'), in Hungarian it means 'to sh*t', should you ever need to know this :D

Now, I'd really like to know what is the Italian meaning of this word! :-)

Anyway, what other languages do you speak? Is there any you'd like to learn?
And may I ask about your surname? It sounds Eastern European, maybe Polish? (I am sorry if you've already stated these, I couldn't find the answers yet )

Wish you all the best,

Hi Paul, thanks for the response :!:

Keith Jarret's quote is marvelous, it reminded me of a buried memory about a music teacher who said to an audience (mostly teens hoping to enter an academy): "A musician isn't only built of practice, knowing nothing more about life but repetitions. Go out and fall in love, go out and get inspiration for honest music[...]"

Back to the topic; Monty Python is really prog on screen! I believe here in Mexico never got the show (I can't really tell, i wasn't born, I'm 24) or reruns, but we surely got the movies! Life of Brian and the Holy Grial are hilarious. It's very intelligent comedy.

Well, thank you very much for your time and dedication to fans. I hope you don't mind if i keep asking weird questions! Blessings.

Hi Luis,

Thanks for your kind words, they mean a lot. Welcome to the website. :o)

What a good point - other art, experience and emotional outlets influence music so much. I heard an interview with jazz pianist Keith Jarret; when he was asked if anything other than music influenced his own music he laughed and explained that, for him, music is not influenced by music, but by everything else in life.

I enjoy watching all sorts of movies and films. I'm a massive fan of Monty Python - I think their Flying Circus episodes and their movies where pure prog on film! I remember as a kid feeling awestruck; the way they weaved together so many seemingly unrelated sketches in such a seamless fashion so that a film became one big creative flow was just genius. I still get inspired whenever I watch an episode. Also, there's deep messages in there - they managed to entertain whilst getting important messages across... something that's hard to do.

Paul

Hi Paul! First of all, i have to say you have an awesome website!
This is my first post, my name is Luis, and as you can guess i'm a fan of yours. I really can't beleive your skills! Your work with Neal Morse is unbelievable!

Well, my question is about movies. What movies do you enjoy?

I'm curious because we can get a lot of information about your musical inspiration (classical and prog music, classical piano players, your preference on electric guitar over classical guitars, etc.), but i don't have a clue if images (movies or pictures) have influenced you.

Blessings from Mexico.

First of all i would like to say i really love your playing!!!
I am following your tourblog. Very cool to play with dream theater and getting complements from 2 of the best musicians of the world!

But i asked myself if you're going to play with Neal and the rest on the Xnoizz Flevo Festival, because it's not listed in the upcoming tours section.
That would be too bad, because i'm going to that festival and would like to see you play live!

Hello Forum,

I hope you're all well :o)

A few weeks back, I posted loads of Carl Palmer Band audience photos in the tour blog section.

North America / Canada audience photos are here:
http://www.paulbielatowicz.com/category/tour-blog/carl-palmer-band-us-tour-2006/

and audience photos from everywhere else in the world are here:
http://www.paulbielatowicz.com/category/tour-blog/audience-photos-2004-2006/

Paul on "Practice routine"

Hey Chris,

When drawing up a practice routine I think it's important to consider 2 things first...

1. How much time are you going to allot each day to practicing (make sure you're realistic about this - it's better to say that you're going to practice for 2 hours every day and stick to that than to plan to practice for 5 hours and only manage 2 hours... that way you'll be sure to get through everything you plan to practice).

2. Decide the different areas you want to work on in your daily practice routine.

Once you've decided those 2 things you should then split your allotted time into equal sections and draw up a timetable that incorporates everything you want to practice... technique, theory, etc...

In order to improve in specific areas you need to be practicing the same thing every day - it's a big help and a great motivation if you keep a practice diary and write your progress each day (for example, if it's speed you're wanting to achieve, make a note of what BPM you manage to play an exercise comfortably at each day - hopefully you should be able to look back and see your progress).

As for WHAT to practice, that's personal - it's up to you and depends on what you want to improve on. Also, bare in mind that your practice routine should be constantly changing from week to week / month to month as you improve and progress. Having said that, however, make sure you always allot a set amount of time each day to just playing; having fun, getting creative and making music - putting into practice all those things you've worked on that day.

I hope that helps

:o)

If not, keep checking back here for news.

Nice to meet you,

Hi Paul,

Gratz on the forum/site! It looks awesome!

I was wondering if you have any solo stuff or any songs written that you are gonna put on cd? Your playing is really inspiring! I've seen you for the first time with the Neal Morse band, I know Collin (he grew up in the same area/church as me), was checking out stuff that he is doing atm and saw you ripping the guitar! A cool surprise :)

Take care and all the best,
Skyth.

Hi Paul,
we met on the myspace platform and I had been waiting for your site; but now it seems to be done - great; I like that "comic hippie style"...
Great site, because I could take a brief look behind "the man on the guitar" which I saw first on the "Sola Scriptura" DVD (and nearby - who blew mw away!).
I´m waiting for your book and meanwhile enjoy surfing around your virtual unsiverse... All the best to you!

Hey Fabrizio,

Yeah, you're right, I used a Mesa Boogie on the Sola Scriptura tour.

That was actually loaned to me by Elisa, Neal's Dutch guitarist. When we tour in different countries we usually use whatever equipment we can borrow / loan. As long as I can get hold of some sort of valve amp with a foot switch then I'm usually happy!

I think the Mesa Boogie worked out great for the tour with Neal.

I don't have any plans to use digital equipment for my amp sound - I like the sound of a real valve amp too much! Even when I record demos, I use a valve amp through my palmer speaker simulator (see the studio gear section on the website).

Ciao again Paul!
I'm curious about the live gear used with Neal Morse.
I have seen on the DVD "Sola Sriptura and Beyond" that you have used Mesa Boogie stuff (if I'm not mistaken).
So something different about the gear described in your site.
How do you feel with that stuff and in general how do you feel when you are on stage with "tour service" stuff?
Do you plan to use digital equipments (like pods or similar) in the future?
Grazie

Hey mate,

Good to see you on here.

I'm afraid that'll be all for the cartoon columns - they were originally for Guitarist Magazine, but unfortunately never made it to print... so I decided to stick them on here. I may well hunt down and add the missing audio for them (there's some really funny stuff)... although that will probably mean a LONG search of the vaults - we'll see.

Well, funny you should mention about the book! It's going to be finished by Christmas and then I should have it published / printed within the first few months of next year - will keep you posted via the website.

Hi Fabrizio,

Thanks for your kind words.

For building independence (and, just as important, strength) in both hands, I would recommend trying to play everything you would normally play with your fretting hand with your tapping hand... scales, arpeggios, etc... all legato exercises work well as tapping exercises if you simply apply them to your tapping hand.

As for playing a piece with two very separate parts in each hand (such as the Wallace and Gromit theme) I find the best way to start is by working out which notes are played together - that really helps you keep both hands in sync.

Hope that helps

:o)

Hi Paul,
first congratulations for you new site!
My question is about developing tapping technique: I found your tapping style very inspiring (especially the Wallace and Gromit theme... if you have any tabs to send me... :-)).
Which is the better way to "see" the fingerboard to make both the hands independent?
(Sorry for my poor English...!)

Hey Mike,

Firstly, respect for making the first official forum post (even before the website has been launched!).

In answer to your question, to be honest, the tapping stuff I do wasn't really inspired by guitarists - it came more from watching and listening to pianists. I saw that they used both hands to effortlessly play scales and arpeggios and adapted the idea for guitar.
